As the Ford Explorer in front of us came to a screeching halt, the driver slammed on their brakes bringing us all to a standstill. There were no cars ahead of them for at least 10 car lengths. I questioned what I could not see that had caused us to stop so suddenly.

Then, I noticed the driver, their eyes glued to the rearview mirror, was more concerned with what was behind them than driving toward their destination.

Tuesday morning highway driving into downtown is always a journey.

It’s also a time for me to practice patience, awareness, and the Spiritual Principles I’m often asked about as a Practitioner.

Now this post isn’t about commenting on people’s driving skills (that’s another topic for another time).  It’s about the power of choice to drive forward on the road of our lives by using our powers of focus and awareness.

“See, when you drive home today, you’ve got a big windshield on the front of your car. And you’ve got a little bitty rearview mirror. And the reason the windshield is so large and the rearview mirror is so small is because what’s happened in your past is not near as important as what’s in your future.” ~ Joel Osteen

Science of Mind and Spirit teaches Life is always moving forward. The Power and Presence of Spirit is creating anew, each and every day. Forever giving of Itself, Life, Spirit, or God, is constantly manifesting in perfect form for our highest good all the time. Life never goes backward. Never gets stuck in the past. Flowers bloom. Water and streams flow forward. We age forward, not being born old and getting younger day by day.

Ernest Holmes, our founder, writes “put the past entirely behind … make your thought perceive the ever-present reality.” Holmes is speaking about how what and where we focus becomes our life and that our ever-present reality is caused by our thoughts and our intentional focus.

So… where’s your focus? And are you driving while looking out your windshield at the possibility of a bright and abundant future? Or are you focused on your past by looking in the rearview mirror?

If you’re willing to drive toward a new destination – love, joy, happiness, or abundance, I invite you to do a brief Spiritual Practice with me.

Take a breath and assess where you are in your life. Are you happy? Could you invite more abundance, joy, or love in your life?

Now, let’s look at where you want to go. Much like driving, before you get behind the wheel, you have some destination in mind. What is yours? Would you like more adventure? More life? More love? Do you have your hands on the wheel, eyes forward? What view do you see as you look into the future of your life?

Finally, let’s look at how you’re driving in your life. Are you moving forward? Or is your focus based on what’s in your rearview mirror?

Choosing to drive forward gives you a sense of freedom, a thrill of reaching your destination. And it can also be scary depending on how far you are wanting to go. And you are never alone.

There are Practitioners who can guide you. There are classes that will help you get to your destination with a few less bumps and detours. Here at CSLBV Rev Lea is teaching a new class on Loving Yourself in September.

I invite you this week to choose to drive forward. Eyes in front. Using your mirrors only for changing lanes.

As you continue on your journey, you may notice “drive forward” becomes a mantra of sorts (it sure has for me).

Affirmation: I drive forward in my life, looking at my future with enthusiasm and joy.
