Uncolonizing is being responsible for a dominant cultures low vibration or low consciousness behaviors, patterns and ways of being. An example is the Canadian government is giving over $30 billion to indigenous children that were taken away from their families and put into institutionalized schools.
This is one definition of colonization:
Colonize: to take control of (a people or area) especially as an extension of state power : to claim (someone or something) as a colony.
An example that is closer to home is the use of the poinsettia flower around the holidays. Western cultures associate the poinsettia with European holidays, in its native culture of Mexico it was something totally different.
Kwe•tla•so•cheetl, the indigenous pronunciation of poinsettia.
The cuetlaxochitl flower (poinsettia) is native to Mexico. This is a sacred flower that was colonized and written off in history as a “discovery” of Joel Poinsett’s in the 1800’s.
Joel Poinsett was a slave owner who promoted white supremacy and slavery in his travels and in his political career. He has also been responsible for the displacement of many indigenous peoples along the way by forcibly removing them from their native lands.
Deconstructing and uncolonizing our personal reality and New Thought (Unity, Centers for Spiritual Living, Divine Science) by addressing disempowering cultural constructs is a beautiful way to access The Light, new ways of being and authentic expression. As we soften the old tapes, monkey mind patterns and mental loops caused by colonization, toxic patriarchy and misogyny we are able to open our hearts and invite our authentic Light to flow!
