Three Tips to Developing a Spiritual Practice at Home

Attending service at Center for Spiritual Living Boulder Valley is a wonderful way to fill up spiritually for the week. Surrounding yourself with others on the same path, perhaps learning something new, and immersing yourself in the energy of the center itself can’t help but raise your vibration and set you on a great path for the week.

The truth is attending church is one wonderful way to be close to God. In addition to Sunday service, developing and strengthening your Spiritual Practice is something that can be done every day. Feeling connected to your Higher Power is like a muscle, the more you use it the stronger it is.

The journey to cultivating a strong Spiritual Practice is unique to each of us and gets easier the more often you consciously take the time to connect. Developing a daily spiritual practice enhances your life in many ways.

Here are a few things you can do at home to cultivate a stronger connection to Spirit:

1. Take time each day in silence. Take a few minutes to quiet your incessantly chattering mind and think about what God means to you. This can be as simple as 2 minutes of quiet time, with no television or devices. You can spend your two minutes repeating an affirmation that speaks to you, meditating, or simply in silence. There is no right way to do this. The point is setting your focus and intention for a 2-minute connection with your Higher Power. You can extend the two minutes to longer when you feel ready. Consistency and focus are more important than length of time.

2. Read inspirational books. Spiritually based books are terrific and there are many books in the motivational genre that will work just as well. Classics such as Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill or The Success Principles by Jack Canfield are a few examples that fit the bill. If you can spend 5-10 minutes each morning reading something uplifting it will change your vibration for the entire day.

3. Create a healing space in your home. The space doesn’t have to be anything big and fancy, simply a place designated for your spiritual self. It may be a shelf or desk where you keep your special things or a small room you can go to by yourself and spend time with God. The intention is when you enter this space you feel a closer connection to God. Entering the space elevates your vibration because when you go there you are in connection with the Divine. The ritual of using the same space for the same purpose will automatically train your body and mind to connect with the Divine.

The keys to incorporating a spiritual practice at home are consistency, intention and practice. Even if you just use one of these three practices you will see results almost immediately. If you struggle – keep at it. After all, it is called a Spiritual Practice for a reason!
