Pain Pushes Until Vision Pulls

When we experience pain, it creates a sense of discomfort or dissatisfaction that pushes us to seek relief or improvement. Pain can be a signal that something is wrong or that we are facing obstacles or challenges that need to be addressed. It can motivate us to take action, make changes, or seek solutions to alleviate the pain and restore a state of well-being. AND the role of vision or knowing our desired outcome shapes our response to pain. While pain may initially push us, it is ultimately the vision of a better future or the pursuit of our goals and aspirations that pulls us forward. Having a clear vision of what we want to achieve or the life we desire can provide us with the motivation and direction to overcome pain and work towards a more positive state.

Life has pain and challenges. A great tool to ground yourself and become present in the moment is box breathing. This extraordinarily simple process, even if it’s only done for 30 or 45 seconds, shifts the brain chemistry and allows presence to gently arise. At the end of a box breathing session goals or vision for the future are much more available. I invite you to play with this in your daily spiritual practice. After several repetitions this will become an important part of your toolbox!

Step 1: Breathe in, counting to four slowly. Feel the air enter your lungs.
Step 2: Hold your breath for 4 seconds. Try to avoid inhaling or exhaling for 4 seconds.
Step 3: Slowly exhale through your mouth for 4 seconds.
Step 4: Repeat steps 1 to 3 until you feel re-centered.
