Discomfort Grows Us

It’s almost spring! In a bit, seeds that were dormant all winter will waken, soak in moisture, and burst into root and leaf. Robins always nest on our downspout; it’s very likely that we’ll be able to watch chicks hatch, grow and leave the nest again. It’s scary to watch the fledglings learn to fly; they are horrible at it. But they have to; if they stay where they are comfortable they’d die. Robins are made to fly.

Discomfort works on us in a similar way. When life throws us a curveball, it’s like nature’s way of nudging us out of our cozy little nests and into the big wide world. When we’re faced with challenges, we’re forced to stretch ourselves, to reach deep down into the soil of our spirit and find those roots of resilience.

It’s not always easy; far from it. But discomfort is the natural call of the soul to growth, urging us to spread our wings. It’s in the tough times that we discover what we’re made of. It’s like tilling the soil of our character, breaking up the hard ground to make way for new growth. We learn to dig deep, to tap into hidden reserves of strength we never knew we had. And there’s nothing more satisfying than seeing the tender shoots of Spirit push their way through the dirt, resilient and determined against all odds.

So, when life hands you lemons, don’t just make lemonade – plant those seeds of difficulty, water them with perseverance, and watch them grow into a garden of strength and resilience that’ll withstand any storm that comes your way.
