This presentation touches on the basics of Newtonian Mechanics and Special Relativity, with the goal to explore the metaphysical metaphors which arise. The implicit spirituality provides new perspectives on oft-voiced mystical teachings, which are reinforced with discussion and meditation. Newtonian mechanics shows how the varied and sometime chaotic experiences of motion and non-motion can be understood with simple, elegant laws grounded in absolute space and time. A metaphor suggested here is that the orchestrated dance of matter follows from an extant Sacred Intelligence in all things. The classic electromagnetic theory of light is given as a necessary prelude to Special Relativity. Special Relativity is presented focused on the conceptual destruction of absolute space and time, using the classical thought experiments of Einstein demonstrating the bizarre concepts of time dilation, length contraction, and the equivalence of energy and mass. Spiritual metaphors arising here include: timelessness/eternity for massless beings/spirit; destruction of the seemingly-obvious concepts of simultaneity and causality; and the re-visioning of mass as energy.
Presenter: Dr. Jay Burch.
Jay studied Physics, Philosophy and Mathematics in college as a prelude to an envisioned career in Philosophy of Science. His career focus detoured permanently into Physics because of, well, the money doing physics versus driving a taxi. He received his PhD in 1977 in Nuclear Physics, a subject which he dropped like a hot rock after graduation. After a stint teaching Physics at Colorado School of Mines, he found fruitful and meaningful employment for the rest of his career at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in the fields of building energy conservation and renewable energy. But questions about the meaning and shortcomings of Physics and human knowledge in general dogged him throughout his career. And still do today, with this talk a small step on that journey.
Third Thursday Spiritual Forums present mind-broadening and spirit-enriching topics every month. Further information: contact Dr. Jay Burch (phone 720-917-9303, or email: firstname.lastname@example.org).
